Gatorade Endurance

This was a cool site to work on, mainly because it was for Gatorade! I worked along side with a large creative agency in LA as well as some contacts of mine at Universal Sports (what’s up guys). Honestly, when I first started this project I didn’t know who Ryan Sutter was at all. But in doing the project I found myself watching the videos and definitely rooting for him. Now, I’m not even maintaining the site anymore and I’m still checking it out just to see what’s going on with him!

I built the site out in PHP, HTML/CSS and jQuery, using WordPress as the CMS of course. The theme is all custom and it’s utilizing some sweet ajax and jQuery features as well. I also incorporated a custom Flash player they had built for the videos (check out the video timeline, it’s pretty sweet).

Epic Electric Vehicles

Epic is building some awesome electric vehicles right here in Southern California! I was super excited when their creative director approached me about doing their web development for them. All the development is being done in PHP, HTML/CSS with of course some killer javascript/jQuery mixed in! We’re utilizing Joomla for their CMS which is working out well for them. I’m super stoked to go visit their operation one of these days, and may even have the opportunity to take one of these bad boys for a spin!.

Hahn Communications

This is Donna Hahn’s new site we built for her on top of WordPress. I designed and developed a custom theme for the new WordPress install I did for her. I built it out as a true CMS which utilizes both the pages and posts features of WordPress. As always, I’m using the new custom menu feature offered with WP 3.0+. One of the best parts of WordPress is that my clients love updating their sites! With very little instruction she’s already jumped in there and added some new blog posts. I’m excited for her and think that her new site will generate more traffic and gain a better response.

Aero in Windows Server 2008

I totally love Windows 7! One of my favorite aspects of it (beyond it’s stability) is the user interface, it’s very functional and pretty. This week I just started my new job at Theme Your World, and as I started setting up my new machine I realized that I was missing Aero. At first I thought I was just using a “classic” mode which is why I had the old school task bar and start menu. So I immediately went in and tried to select the Aero theme. I found very quickly that my Aero themes had been disabled by default because I was running Windows Server 2008 R2, and I couldn’t figure out how to enable and use Aero and it’s awesome features. Totally bummed, I consulted one of my very good friends Google. Luckily for me, Google once again came to the rescue! I found this tutorial at The Expta {blog}, but it was a little vague. So I decided to create a little better tutorial to help you make your Windows Server 2008 machine look like Windows 7, complete with Aero!

1. Navigate to your Start Menu, then select All Programs, then Administrative Tools. Click to start the Server Manager.

2. Select Add Features.

3. In the Add Features Wizard window check Desktop Experience and also accept to install the Ink and Handwriting Services when asked. Then click Next.

After install Windows may want you to restart your computer, go ahead with the restart.

4. After your computer has restarted go to Administrative Tools in the Start Menu and click Services.

5. Double click on the Themes service. Then set the Startup type to Automatic and click Apply.

6. After your Startup type is set to Automatic click Start to start the Themes service. Then you can close the Services Manager.

7. Next you’ll need to logout, then log back in.

8. Now you can simply right click an empty spot on your desktop and select Personalize. Now in your Personalize window you’ll be able to select Aero themes, you can also download new Aero themes from Microsoft here. If your videocard is installed correctly you’ll be able to use 3D Flip and you’ll also have the transparent windows sweetness!

Shasta Fire Protection

This project was super fun to work on. Mainly because it was for my friend Jonathan Stahl, the VP of Shasta Fire Protection, Inc. But second to that, he gave me total creative freedom and I got to throw out ideas to him that were basically where ever I wanted to go. He gave me some super good input, and we tweaked some items here and there and we both (along with the Shasta team) think it turned out super good! This was all done with WordPress as the backend, so they can modify and update as they see fit moving forward. They have a very strong and professional business installing fire protection in the Coachella Valley, and I’m happy to see their website portraying that image to their potential customers.

This is my wife’s new blog I designed and developed for her. I went with a retro look and was pretty pleased with how it turned out. We have a ton of features and additions planned for the site, including an e-commerce store. The site is coded in PHP and CSS3, and generates valid HTML. I built it on top of WordPress of course, and have integrated all kinds of sweetness so Melissa can customize her blog as much as she’d like. I’ve also done some initial SEO tuning and already have her dominating the #1 SERP for “so help me lord”.

The content is geared toward Christian Moms, and provides some great inspiration and just plain truth about challenges Moms face every day.

Hello WordPress!

I’ve been designing and coding websites for nearly 15 years now. I first started when I was 15, right after I built my very first 486 computer! After going through that process I was instantly hooked… for life!

Man websites were ugly back then, and the ones I was doing were no exception. I’ve seen the industry really evolve and change, taking form to what we all see online today. Luckily, I made the decision to stay current with the trends and continue on with my experience. I’m totally thankful for that because you still see people designing and developing sites that look like they are straight out of 1996, back when I had first started.

As web tech continued to progress and expand, I saw how amazing the open source community was becoming. I immediately abandoned my .net training, and jumped on the PHP bandwagon. I quickly (after some research of course), settled on using Joomla for my open source CMS. For the last five years I have been a big part of the Joomla community, and had always regarded Joomla to be the best Content Management System out there. I admitted that it had it’s faults, but all in all I thought it was the best. After all, WordPress is a blogging platform… right?

Well, maybe WordPress used to be strictly a blogging platform, but that’s just not true anymore. I have officially made the change to WordPress as my favorite CMS. What’s not to love? It’s straight forward to develop themes for and the community is amazing! Plus look at all the great designers and developers that are behind the system, you just don’t find that anywhere else. The Joomla community needs some help. They’re definitely getting better and with the latest release of 1.6 they included some awesome changes. Most notably they have finally done away with using tables for layout for the main content and component output… About Time! But come on Joomla, MooTools… seriously? How long does it take to realize that jQuery is where it’s at! Another win for WordPress.

Anyway, the point of this post was just to say that WordPress is where it’s at, and I have finally made the jump with my Digital Uprising Design site. All my personal future sites will also be using WordPress.

So hello WordPress, I’m happy to meet you!
